Post-Antibiotic Recovery: Rebuilding the Microbiome with Fibre Diversity
Antibiotics are a miracle of modern medicine. They save lives by killing pathogenic bacteria.

Eating raw bran or unprocessed whole grains immediately after antibiotics can sometimes be too harsh for a sensitive gut.
Sourdough offers the perfect middle ground. The fermentation process partially degrades these complex fibres, increasing their solubility and making them more accessible to the recovering microbiome without causing excessive mechanical irritation [1].

Phase 1: The First 7 Days Post-Antibiotics
Focus on Soluble Fibre.
Bread: Light Rye or Spelt Sourdough.
Why: Soluble fibres (like beta-glucan) are gentle and soothing. They form a gel that protects the mucosal lining while feeding beneficial bacteria.
Phase 2: Days 8-30
Introduce Resistant Starch Diversity.
Bread: A denser, seed-heavy sourdough (e.g., with flax or sunflower seeds) that has been toasted.
Why: You want to challenge the microbiome now. The resistant starch drives butyrate production, which lowers the pH of the colon, creating an environment where pathogens cannot survive but beneficial Lactobacilli thrive.
